What’s In A Name?

Yesterday, Alex from The Run Within posted a great article on funny running quirks.  She started her blog by talking about the fact that, regardless of the name she doesn’t actually talk about running very often.  I’m not going to lie, I’ve noticed that myself… I was initially drawn to Alex’s blog because of the title.  However, even with the lack of posts about running it’s still a great blog (If you haven’t yet, definitely check it out!).  She explained how she started her blog with the intention of talking about running, but that over time it developed into something else.

This got me thinking about my own blog.  I discovered blogs last summer when I randomly one day stumbled onto Peanut Butter Fingers.  I remember thinking how cute is this?!  I loved her fun writing style and all the great tips and recipes she posted.  I soon learned of more and more healthy living style blogs and quickly decided that I wanted in on the fun!  I created “Sweetly Balanced” because I had visions of my blog being this fun healthy living blog about how you can still enjoy sweet indulgences like cup cakes and candies because you eat super healthy and workout…Cupcakes1

I had visions of posting all the delicious, but still healthy food I ate.  I had visions of healthy recipes and great workout routines.  I very quickly learned that I was bored with posting pictures of all the things I ate every day (I also eat a lot of the same things everyday) and that I can’t cook in the slightest let alone develop my own recipe. I also very quickly learned that I’d rather have a bowl of pasta than a salad and that a bag of Goldfish is sometimes the perfect dinner for me.Whole Grain Goldfish

I was beginning to feel like a fraud.  So, I’m not the most healthy person when it comes to my food choices, I’m okay with that.  I stopped posting about eating healthy and instead focused on things that I had more passion about.  I love running, I love telling you about my runs and my workouts and the millions of races I sign up for because I love racing.  I love talking about my friends and family and cute doggies (one day I’ll  have my own).  I love talking about traveling around the world (Even though I  haven’t in a while)  DSCN0175

Maybe my original vision doesn’t exactly match up with what my blog has become, but I guess the name can still fit.  Eat cupcakes then run… BOOM Sweetly Balanced. ;)

How did you come up with your blog name?

  1. I think the name still fits, and I’m glad you chose to write about your passions! I think it comes across perfectly in your writing.
I chose my blog name because you never know what you’ll be doing- coming off injury, choosing races based on cravings for certain distances, summer adventures like hiking, etc.

  2. In the healthy living blogosphere, it seems very normal for blogs to start out as one thing and eventually turn into another. When I started Fitness and Frozen Grapes, I thought I’d blog about my workouts–mainly running–healthy recipes, and frozen grapes, obviously. ;) However, after completing my first triathlon this summer, the sport became a lifestyle, so that’s what I regularly talk about now. And frozen grapes will make a reappearance once spring arrives–it’s too cold for them right now! ;)

  4. Love it! It’s so important in life to have that balance. I love how you said you like salads but you like goldfish, too. Who doesn’t!? I came up with my title for kind of the same reason. I don’t want to portray being ‘perfect’ on my blog. I want it to be real and something that people can read and be like, ‘Oh yeah, me too!’

  5. Such a nice post. I want to lose weight…hence the name. I think I end up talking other stuff as well at times…(Most of the times, to be true)

  6. Love this post :) I actually have had several blog names, but as I changed, they all stopped fitting what I was writing about. Hence, the most generic name ever :P

  8. I love to see blog’s evolve to fit their current lifestyle and what works.
I can totally relate to this post! I did pretty much the same thing. Started with food and realized what in the heck was I thinking? I eat like a kid. Then fell in love with running and changed it up from there. Let’s be real, my blog is like your junk drawer, full of random crap.

  9. I think your name totally fits! It’s all about how you stay balanced within your life and that is different for everyone. I came up with mine because so many people called me crazy when I talked about running… and Crazy Running Girl was born. :)

  10. I agree, I love you name, super creative! I came up with my name b/c I worked at a gym years ago and we made a shirt that said “Fit Happens”, some older ladies were offended, but I thought it was hilarious! And plus, fit doesnt just happen, you really gotta freakin work for it, but none the less, it does happen! I added the Shh in front, hence: Shh..Fit Happens, b/c I like that country song by Sugar Land that says: “Shh…It Happens”.

  11. Julie, this is so refreshing to read. One, because I maybe mention almonds once a month on my blog (what do ya do… ;) ), and two because I’ve been thinking a lot about the whole eating healthy thing. It was so nice to see you say that you’re okay with the way you’re eating. I’m all for the 80-20 philosophy, but I sometimes catch myself thinking things like “does banana bread count for the 20??” or “does my chocolate in my Luna bar count as junk?” I feel like so many people try to fit in this healthy-food mold which involves eating x number of calories, x number of desserts, x number of fruits/veggies.
Your blog reminds me to stay balanced and that it’s not a tragedy to eat an extra cookie. Sorry this was kind of a ramble.. I’m just going with it!
And for the record, I love reading whatever you choose to post about, its the passion behind it that counts :)

  12. I ADORE your blog name btw, totally got drawn to you because of it. And, it does fit! I love hearing about your runs, family and friends! Don’t stop!

I think the first blogs I’ve read was Skinny Runner and RunEatRepeat and HungryRunnergirl. All runners and I have a person diary anywhere where I talk soo much about running, so thought this would be a great outlet!

  13. Thoughtful post! I remember when I was selecting my blog name, thinking, it’s gotta be perfect!

Mine stemmed from a nickname, Doodle, my aunt gave me when I was little. Although, I originally intended to post frequently about my workouts (not food, because we all know I’m a novice in the kitchen), but felt like the name was broad enough that I didn’t need to be confined to just exercise. As it turns out, I rarely post about exercise, and instead, a mish-mash of the “Doodles” that go on in my brain. I guess it worked out for me!

  14. I love sweetly balanced! Actually, me and my hubby came up with mine. I wanted it to include food… which I love, but I also wanted it to include daily things.. so Delights and Delectables was born!
